Measuring Guide

NOTE: It is better if a second person takes the measurements.

Mens Kilts

(Measurements in inches)

In stock kilts have a standard seat size and length, so only the waist needs to be measured to determine the size required. Made to measure kilts require three different measurements: waist, seat and length. Mens kilts traditionally hang about mid knee, or top of the knee if it is a military style kilt.

Waist: Measure snugly around your waist at the height of your belly button.

Seat: Put your feet together and measure around the broadest part of the hips and bum.

Length: Kneel down, keeping your back straight, and measure from the belly button to the floor. UNLESS you are looking for a military style kilt, then (kneeling the same way) you measure from the belly button to the top of the knee. It is especially important to have second person to measure this because if you attempt to measure yourself, it is likely you will lean forward and accidentally alter the measurement.

Ladies Kilts

(Measurements in inches)

Like the mens kilts, the stock kilts have a standard seat size and length, so only the waist needs to be measured to determine the size required. Made to measure kilts require three different measurements: waist, seat and length. Ladies kilts are adaptable, available in a number of different styles and lengths.

Waist: Measure snugly around your waist at the height of your belly button. Ladies, if you would like to have the kilt sit a little lower, measure the waist exactly where you would like it to sit BUT PLEASE let us know that you are not going for the traditional waist!

Seat: Put your feet together and measure around the broadest part of the hips and bum.

Length: Measure from the belly button (or where you have decided you would like the waist of the kilt to sit) to wherever on your leg you would like the kilt to hang.
A STANDARD FULL LENGTH HOSTESS KILT is measured from the belly button to the ankle.

Kilt jackets, waistcoats & formal shirts

(Measurements in inches)

In stock jackets require two measurements: chest and sleeve length. The chest measurement corresponds directly with your size and the sleeve length determines whether you need a short, regular or long jacket. If you are getting a jacket made to order, beyond chest and sleeve length, you should also include your height and waist measurements, especially if the jacket comes with a waistcoat.

Waistcoats made to order require the following measurements: chest, waist and full height. All our formal shirts are standardised according to their collar size.

Chest: Stand up straight and measure under the armpits around the chest. Make sure the tape

Sleeve length: Holding your arm straight and parallel to the side of your body, measure from the ball of shoulder (or seam of another jacket) to the wrist or longer if preferred.

Waist: Measure around your waist at the height of your belly button.

Collar: Measure around the middle of the neck; it is wise to add a ¼ of an inch or ½ an inch to your exact measurement to ensure that the collar will be comfortable. For example, if you measure exactly 15 or 15.25 inches, we would recommend that you go for a size 15.5.

Trousers

(Measurements in inches)

In stock trousers come in standard lengths and require two measurements: waist (high or regular waist is determined by the style of the trouser) and inside leg. Made to measure tartan trousers require four measurements: waist, seat/hip, inside leg and outside leg.

Waist: For HIGH WAIST trousers (most of the made to order and in stock tartan trews), measure around your waist at the height of your belly button. For REGULAR WAIST trousers, measure around your waist at the top of your hip.

Seat/Hip: Put your feet together and measure around the broadest part of the hips and bum.

Inside leg: Standing up straight, your feet shoulder width apart, measure from the groin to the ankle on the inner side of the leg.

Outside leg: Standing up straight, your feet shoulder width apart, measure from the waist to the ankle on the outer side of the leg.
