History of the Plaid
Today's fringed fly plaid is a modern re-interpretation of the feilidh-mhor or Great Plaid. This Great Plaid was a 9 yard length of material that was worn wrapped around the waist and belted, with the remaining fabric draped over the shoulder and gathered to the front. This way it could be used as a cloak and hood to shelter the wearer from the inclement weather.
Today's fly plaid compliments the modern kilt by replacing the heavy length of fabric that was worn over the shoulder with a lighter square of fabric that is worn draped from the shoulder. This is secured in place by the use of a Plaid Brooch. The fly plaid is always made from the same material as the kilt to ensure a consistency of sett and colour between the kilt and the fly plaid.
Please Note
We have made every effort to ensure the colours on screen match the actual fabric colours as close as possible. However, we can not guarantee an exact colour match, as colours will vary depending on your screen settings and resolution.
